Synthetic Turf Care: What Homeowners Need to Know

At Scenic Green, we often get asked, “Does synthetic turf require maintenance?” While artificial grass offers a low-maintenance alternative to natural lawns, it still needs occasional care to keep it looking great and performing well—especially in Indiana’s ever-changing weather.

If you’ve invested in synthetic turf for your home or business, here’s how to take care of it year-round.

Routine Maintenance: Keep It Looking Fresh

Synthetic turf doesn’t grow, but it can still collect debris and flatten over time—especially in high-traffic areas. To keep it in peak condition:

  • Blow or vacuum debris like leaves, twigs, and dust regularly.

  • Rake or brush the turf to stand the blades upright, especially in areas where furniture or foot traffic causes matting.

    • Always use plastic or synthetic bristle rakes—never metal.

  • Rinse it down every so often to remove dust or residue from weather or foot traffic.

After strong storms or windy days, consider scheduling a quick turf check and maintenance visit.

Stain & Spot Cleaning

For spills, sticky messes, or unexpected stains:

  • Blot the area first—don’t rub.

  • Rinse with a mild soap-and-water solution.

  • For extra cleaning, try a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar to eliminate bacteria.

  • Sticky substances? Chill with ice cubes and scrape carefully with a plastic putty knife.

These techniques are safe for your turf and won’t affect the infill layer.

Pet Owners: Odor-Free Turf Tips

If your pets love the lawn, here’s how to keep it clean and odor-free:

  • Remove solid waste promptly.

  • Rinse areas where pets urinate to prevent buildup.

  • Use pet-safe turf disinfectants or neutralizers if odors persist.

    • Products like Zerofill offer odor control and function as infill.

Summer Turf Cooling

Synthetic turf can heat up on hot Indiana summer days. To keep things cool:

  • Spray down your turf occasionally during extreme heat.

  • If your irrigation system is still active, run a short cycle to cool the surface.

  • For added relief, consider T-Cool infill, a product we can install that helps lower surface temperature by up to 50 degrees when wet every 7–10 days.

Winter Turf Care: Snow & Ice

Snow isn’t a problem for turf—but how you remove it matters:

  • Shovel off the top layers, leaving about an inch.

  • Gently broom away the last inch to protect the turf fibers.

  • Avoid using salt or deicers—they can damage drainage and are unsafe for kids and pets.

  • Never use metal rakes or shovels, which can tear the turf.

Fire & Heat Safety

Synthetic turf is durable, but it can’t handle open flames. Please avoid:

  • Smoking or fireworks near the lawn.

  • Placing hot grills or smoldering charcoal close to the turf.

    • A safe distance will prevent melting or burn damage.
